In March of 2000, frustrated by what he saw as a lack of Robot-themed
recordings, Victor Lams, a man from Plymouth, Michigan, set out on a
mission to remedy the situation. Not having the patience to form and
rehearse with a band, or the money to rent a proper studio, Victor was
left with no choice but to write and record the entire 23-track album
himself in a spare bedroom -- which he did, in the space of five months.
Writing and recording at a pace of one song per week, Victor was able to blend a solid
pop-sensibility with elements of jazz and electronic music to create his
unique, off-beat sound. Then, utilizing the impressive graphic design skills of his wife, Jackie,
a cover was created and "Robot Love," was born.
"It was something that needed to be done," Victor states. "No one was
singing about loving the robots. Sure, every now and then we'd be thrown a
Robot song, like 'Robot Girl,' or 'Dancing Machine,' but these were really
just clever metaphors for certain types of people -- not songs about
actual Robots, Robots like the kind that scans your groceries, for
example."
But not every track on "Robot Love," is a Robot-themed track. In addition
to his mechanical friends, Victor also writes about such varied and
pertinent subjects as bigshot sea captains, marshmallow ducks, vampire
babies, and even the existential crisis that is the weekly trip to the
video store. "Even I," explains Victor, "need to stop singing about Robots
sometimes."
And stop he does -- but not before sharing a little bit of his own brand
of musical magic with anyone who can spare the time to listen.
